A woman survived 20 days without food when she was stuck in the middle of nowhere in the Grand Canyon.
Linda Forney took a wrong turn while taking her dog for a walk and got to her crazy situation.
Thank goodness for 4 local villagers who found her footprints in areas where tourists wouldn't venture.
They finally found her lying down, after she decided that she had lost all hopes of being found.

20 days... That's a day shy for it to actually reach 3 weeks.

I can't imagine standing in the middle of nowhere, in the scorching heat, the extreme condition, and with nothing but a little water available.
Could you?

Yeah, she was stupid. So was I 23 years ago. Walked with a boyfriend in July down the canyon. Idiots, no water. The Kaibab trail. I was tired in the heat and halfway down saw a short cut to the bright angel trail. Told friend who wanted to continue that I would meet him at a hotel at the top and would leave a message if I went somewhere else. I got lost following a washout to the end of a cliff instead of this hard to see unused trail. After hours, I found water dripping like she did. But I retraced my steps after several false starts, returned to the Kaibab. I was tired and a group hiking down were merciless. They would only give me water if I carried one of their backpacks ALL THE WAY down to the Phantom Ranch. So I did, just missing the helicopter changing shifts for rangers. The ranger was equally merciless, offering to "share his bed" with all that implied, or to give me a flashlight and two gallons of water to go back up. He also radioed a message to the hotel that just said to meet me at the top of the Kaibab Trail at 3 am (he was exactly right). The flashlight died halfway up but the full moon prevented me from going over any cliffs or off the trail. Two hikers gave me a beer and encouraged me. The last few steep turns of the trail I pulled my self straight up the cliff, avoiding the zig zags. Manfred picked me up but was angry, thinking I had gone off with some guys we'd met. The ranger didn't say why to meet me there. We finally straightened it out but I was exhausted. And stupid.

Darwin awards. I don't really blame the treatment anonymous received. Hiking the Grand Canyon without water? Wow.

Equally the same with the Linda girl. She left her pack? WTF? I'm actually disappointed she made it out. I just hope she didn't have any kids.

The whole time is watched this i kept wondering out loud why she made it out. Someone so stupid should not be sharing the planet with regular people. Seriously, leave your pack and not even take your water?! Wtf lady?! You're 25 not 5!! 100% agree in the hope that she didn't have kids to pollute the gene pool.

I have just watched this show on TV and cannot believe the story was told as though this idiot is some sort of hero that deserves our sympathy. What a goose she is and how desperate is this show for a story. As for Daniel K's comment the same goes for you you bleeding heart fool.

I just watched this episode and was just THUNDERSTUCK that anyone could be so selfish as to take a DOG into the Grand Canyon I agree with Ms. Very Stupid - that dog was smart - the first time she yelled at Cocojin he said 'COOL LADY I was being all loyal and shit but you yell at me after dragging my butt all the way from Pittsburg into a desert? Ain't stickin' roun' for the second Act" -- it's AMAZING to me how INVINCIBLE we are before the age of 40 - right about the time we don't WANT to do stupid stuff we get SMART ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY SURVIVE if we DO stupid stuff - I was hiking from my early 20s until an injury prevented from doing so but I NEVER EVER did anything remotely as stupid as this - no water? abandon your pack? no check in date in case something goes wrong? not marking the trail when hiking (stupidly) and UNmarked trail? Jesus I hope kids who watched this LEARNED something

I saw this on TV the other night there is know way you could survive that long without food in those conditions. I think she ate the dog coco that's how she stayed alive. I thought it was funny how the dog would just run off.

New meaning to a mans best friend I guess...

Anonymous said...

You don't even know what you would do. So keep your mouth shut if you have no feelings for her. SHAME ON YOU.

I would eat the pooch...

There are a lot of heartless idiots out there that act like they have never been foolish. Shame on them and their cruel comments. This was an uplifting story that teaches a leason to the uninformed. Maybe God will see to it tgat these idiots are stranded in no mans land naked, afraid, alone with no water! There's an ass born every second. Rock on Linda!

By her actions it looks like she had never backpacked before. I have been through Pittsburgh and that area would be a good place to learn before trying out the Grand canyon. 2nd, you NEVER backpack alone, especially in an unfamiliar place. 3rd always have a map and compass in case you get lost. And always leave your destination and time you will be back with the park rangers. I am a retired mailman and have backpacked in the Smokies, part of the Appalachian trail, and in the Rockies. I will not criticize her, young people do things they would not do when they are older and wiser. Think we all have done something unwise that we later look back and can only scratch our head. Newsflash, humans make mistakes.

Can anyone please tell me what happen to the dog? Did they say if she ever saw it again...I really need to know, saw this episode on the plane and we landed before it ended.. I really am a dog lover and was wondering what happen to the dog do they tell you..aside from the fact that it seems it ran away according to the feed here.

Someone found the dog and it was returned to her. Wrote the Post before yours. Retired mailman and dog owner.

When bad time comes then u make mistakes, you heartless thick people

Wow, I am just blown away by the vicious comments here.

That girl was young and naive, and made some stupid choices.

Her misadventure happened in 1975. Long before internet and Google. No quick check on 'tips for hiking' and 'the ten essentials' on your cell phone or laptop. Unless she had family or friends who were hikers, any guidance would have had to come from researching books. Who would think to do that for a short couple hour hike on marked trails? Her plan was a road trip to see some sights, not a backpacking adventure into the back country.

The heartlessness and lack of compassion in people nowadays is truly disturbing. You folks can actually look in the mirror without feeling ashamed?

Anonymous said...

Really!!! You've probably done some stupid things in your life as well. Have you polluted the gene pool?

The difference between the mistakes this lady made (small but cumulative and made without supernatural knowledge of the outcome of every trail in the canyon) and the mistakes any of you critical posters has made is that you managed to keep yours from discovery, and therefore feel safe to pretend superiority.

Anonymous said...

The mistakes were huge, what are you on about.

1. Hiking alone somewhere completely foreign
2.not checking in with park rangers incase something goes wrong
3. Not bringing a map of the area and going off of hearsay from local people
4.coming to a fork in the road where not turning around could mean big problems
5. Leaving your supplies on the side of the road in a huge vast desert
6. Traveling for over an hour with no sign of the village and not turning back immediately to turn to the fork in the road
7. Continuing on the road while it's pitch black instead of hunkering down and trying again in the morning
8. Wandering around in the dark so you get lost and lose the trail that had your supplies left on.
9. Finding a glass bottle in the desert, using it to hold your emergency life water and not lashing it to your body with cloth or plant material.

This woman was a complete imbecile, how she survived another 30 odd years to tell the story is anyone's guess. I predicted halfway through the episode she wouldn't make it out on her own accord and would be saved from some stroke of luck. It was only through insanely good fortune she escaped without dying

i just feel bad for the poor dog . I watched the whole video and i thought the dog died.

Type Surviving 20 days lost in the grand canyon and you will find it

Anonymous said...

Lets start with the basics. She sees a sign but can't read it. There is a creek right there. If you are to get to a waterfall, it should be UPSTREAM of where the water is coming from because you're in a damn canyon. Duh. Instead, she goes downstream where the water is flowing towards.

Regardless, she strays away from the only water source and leaves her backpack behind because its too heavy. Wow. I hope she was smart enough to know the sun rises in the East and goes down in the west. That would have saved her life. Leaving markers with rocks or something would have helped or tracing your footsteps on the ground. I wonder what methods the Indians used to find her? Footprints? People are just plain STUPID. Yes, she should not be alive because she is stupid.

I started watching but didn't finish. I was more concerned for her dog. Dogs are loyal to their owner no matter how stupid they are. She's a few compass points off in the head. Shame.

Some of the lowlife scum on here with their vicious comments are simply oxygen thieves. In the mid 70s things weren’t they way they are now. Poor signage, unmarked trials, iffy map availability, fewer hikers than today.....everything moved way more slowly back then. Linda seems like a kind soul with a questing spirit. She was also a contributor to society with her plans to be a nurse. Some of the commenters here are most likely sitting on their huge arses stuffing their faces, waiting for their next government handout, while venting their malice at a person who underwent a a traumatic experience. THEY are the idiots.

Lol I only just saw this particular episode and lol'd when the dog did the runner on her

I agree. She never quit! I bet half of these negative commentors would have quit, cried, blamed the world for their problems and died after 5 days.
